If you are investigating braces or other corrective treatments for yourself or your child, you will have a lot of questions and concerns about what to expect during your first visit to the orthodontist.  The specialists at Orthodontist Select want you to be prepared and know what to expect when you visit any of our Frisco, Allen and McKinney practices.

Meeting Your Orthodontist

As soon as you get here, know that you can trust your orthodontist to diagnose and treat any orthodontic problems. Orthodontists are more than general dentists because they are specialists who have earned an extra three years of training after graduating from dental school and are experts in aligning and straightening teeth.  Orthodontists can diagnose, prevent and even treat a variety of dental facial problems that can impact your appearance and health.

Consultation and Check-Up

Your orthodontist will begin by performing an examination of your mouth, teeth, and jaw.  The orthodontist may also ask you about any problems or challenges you are having for example clicking or popping of jaw, chewing or swallowing, and general jaw pain.  Your orthodontist will also perform digital X-Rays and 3D imaging to make sure that they check everything that may need to be addressed.

Treatment Plans

After the Orthodontist has performed the exam and reviewed the digital x-rays, he or she will discuss treatment options best suited for your case. The most common treatment options may include one of the following:

  1. Dental Braces: Traditional metal braces typically come to mind when thinking of braces. Compared to metal braces in the past, modern metal braces are smaller and flatter, with less bulk and significantly more comfort. Ceramic braces are the same size and shape as metal braces, except that they have tooth-colored or clear brackets that blend in to teeth. Some even use tooth-colored wires to be even less noticeable.
  2. Invisalign: this treatment option uses 3D software to create custom aligners that are almost invisible, which makes them more discrete and comfortable to wear.
  3. Corrective Appliances: Appliances such as palate expanders and space maintainers can help correcting jaw alignment and poor oral habits. These types of treatments are usually recommended to our younger patients to help guide development.
